The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor stated that the worsening cash liquidity crisis in the Gaza Strip is a direct result of Israeli policies aimed at dismantling the foundations of life for the population, particularly the banking infrastructure.
The Monitor explained that since October 2023, the Israeli occupation has deliberately destroyed banks and ATMs and prevented the entry of cash into the Strip. This has led to an almost complete shutdown of banking institutions, creating a suffocating humanitarian and economic crisis that threatens the daily lives of residents.
The Monitor warned that these practices constitute a form of genocide prohibited under international law, noting that the crisis has exceeded tolerable limits after more than 18 months of its imposition. Residents are now resorting to the black market to obtain cash, facing exorbitant fees that worsen their suffering.
