Gaza Municipality Warns of Consequences of Discharging Sewage into the Sea

The Gaza Municipality has warned of serious environmental and health risks due to the continued discharge of large quantities of untreated sewage into the sea. This comes as a result of the severe damage inflicted on sewage pumping and treatment stations and pipelines caused by the ongoing Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.

Preliminary statistics indicate that more than 30% of the sewage networks in the city have been either completely or partially damaged. Consequently, around 22,000 cubic meters of untreated sewage are being pumped into the sea daily, amid the near-total shutdown of the treatment system due to direct targeting, power outages, and fuel shortages.

The municipality has renewed its urgent appeal to international and humanitarian organizations to intervene immediately, support its efforts to repair damaged sewage infrastructure, enable its crews to access affected sites, and provide essential operational supplies.
