The Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported growing criticism within Israel’s security establishment and the occupation army regarding the political path taking shape for the future of the Gaza Strip.
The newspaper quoted senior military officials as saying that optimistic U.S. statements about Gaza’s future conceal security approaches that lack practical enforcement mechanisms and fail to provide answers to fundamental questions, including who would disarm Hamas and who would actually govern the Gaza Strip.
According to Haaretz, the Israeli army clarified that the proposed “New Gaza” project is, in practice, far more limited than how it is being marketed to the public. The first planned neighborhood to be established in the Rafah area would accommodate no more than 1% of Gaza’s population, and the initial phase would rely on temporary structures, including caravans and tents, rather than permanent stone buildings.
The newspaper added that estimates within the army indicate that implementing this phase would take no less than six months.
